Okinawa Aquarium – Okinawa Churaumi Suizokukan [沖縄美ら海水族館]
The Okinawa Churaumi aquarium is said to be the best aquarium in Japan, located in Okinawa [沖縄], the southernmost prefecture.
The name of “Churaumi” was selected by public vote among Japanese. Chura means beautiful in the Okinawan Japanese dialect and umi means ocean in Japanese.
Second Largest Aquarium Tank “The Kuroshio Sea”
The main tank called the “Kuroshio sea” [黒潮の海] holds 7,500 cubic meters (1,981,000 US gal) of water. When the aquarium was opened in 2002, had the world’s largest acrylic glass panel measuring 8.2 by 22.5meters (27 by 74 feet) with a thickness of 60 cm (24 in).
There are three whale sharks at the Churaumi Aquarium, the largest is named Jinta. Jinta holds the world record for longest time kept in captivity. Feeding sessions for the whale sharks and other fishes are held twice daily (15.00pm / 17.00pm).
